Every product has an origin story. Most aren't worth telling. This one is.
The Vettex Grip Sleeve didn't start in a product development lab or a corporate R&D department. It started on a football field, with a problem every skill position player knows — you want to protect your arms from turf burn, but you can't sacrifice your grip on the ball.
The Problem Every Receiver Knows
Standard compression arm sleeves are great for muscle warmth, compression, and turf burn protection. But put one on and try to catch a football — you'll notice immediately that the slick polyester fabric actually makes it harder to grip the ball. Players have always had to choose: protect your arms or protect your grip.
Mike Pullen, a wide receiver and Biomedical Engineering student at Georgia Tech, decided there had to be a better answer. The solution wasn't to add sticky gloves on top of a sleeve — it was to engineer grip directly into the sleeve material itself.
Built at Georgia Tech
What started as a materials science class project turned into a serious invention. Pullen developed a compression arm sleeve with integrated grip-enhancing textile technology — a fabric that provides the protection of a traditional sleeve while actively improving the wearer's grip on the ball.
The product, originally called the LZRD Sleeve under the company LZRD Tech, caught the attention of Georgia Tech's innovation community and was recently featured in the Georgia Tech Alumni Association's Made By Jackets publication.
ACC InVenture Prize Finalist — 2021
The ACC InVenture Prize is one of the most prestigious undergraduate innovation competitions in the country. In 2021, LZRD Tech represented Georgia Tech as a finalist at the competition hosted by NC State University. Pullen pitched to a panel of judges that included Marques Colston — the New Orleans Saints' all-time leading receiver — making it one of the few times a football innovation was judged by someone who had actually played at the highest level of the sport.
The ACC InVenture Prize platform gave LZRD Tech national visibility and the validation that the invention was solving a real problem — not just for one player, but for every skill position athlete at every level of the game.
From Competition to the Field
After the ACC InVenture Prize, the work continued. The product was refined, patented (U.S. Patent No. 11,957,549), and relaunched under the Vettex Sports brand. Today, the Vettex Grip Sleeve is worn by athletes at 40+ FBS programs — from high school players on Friday nights to college athletes competing on national television every Saturday.
It's the only football arm sleeve on the market built around patented grip technology, and it received the first-ever NCAA and NFHS approval for a grip-enhancing wearable.
What Makes the Grip Sleeve Different
The difference isn't marketing — it's material science. The grip-enhancing textile woven into the Vettex Grip Sleeve creates controlled friction between the sleeve and the ball, giving receivers, defensive backs, and running backs a tangible advantage in contested catch situations.
Combined with moisture-wicking compression fabric, it does everything a traditional arm sleeve does — warmth, protection, compression — while adding something no other sleeve on the market can offer: grip.
